Not Getting Paid

Hi there, hoping someone can help me out here.

I am a contractor for a company. How jobs work is there is an online portal, a job gets posted, I go and do it, upload the work, and then I get paid via direct deposit. I have worked for them for several years.

Before anyone says anything, I know I should have been paying closer attention.

I realized that I have not gotten paid since the end of last year. Not a single cent.

In total, I am owed close to $5K for work for the end of last year and this year inclusive.

I am currently in contact with the owner of the company. However, I'm not sure what is going to happen.

A few questions:

1) With the holidays and having just noticed this, is there a timeline for which I should demand payment?

2) Is there any legal recourse for me?

3) Any other advice?

Thanks all. Can't believe this is happening — you don't usually think you're just not going to get paid by a seemingly reputable company. I will obviously be paying much closer attention in the future to my bank statements.
