Replaced My Windshield, Shop Has Tried And Failed To Fix Calibration Issues They Caused, Haven't Offered A Solution Yet, Can This Warrant A Chargeback?
Location: Texas
About a month ago, I had my windshield replaced on my 2019 Audi Q5 (non-OEM glass) after a crack. Ever since, I've been getting constant Pre Sense failures, basically the car telling me its front collision/safety camera isn't working right.
I got my hands on an OBDeleven and scanned the car myself, two things stood out:
- The front camera's static calibration log shows the last calibration was done back in 2019, at the factory. Meaning the shop never actually recalibrated it after swapping the glass, even though they claimed this included calibration.
- There's an active fault code which lines up exactly with a camera that was never properly static calibrated to begin with.
So basically I paid for a full job (glass + calibration), got the glass, but the calibration was either skipped or botched, and have encountered issues like the seatbelt pinning me to my seat and the key fob not being recognized in the middle of a drive.
On top of that, two separate sources + the dealership have now told me the non-OEM glass itself might be part of the problem, and that I may need to go OEM to actually get the camera calibrated properly, something the shop did not warn me about.
I want to dispute the charge with my credit card company, but I've got two questions:
- Am I right to issue a chargeback? The glass itself is fine, it's specifically the calibration/service portion that never happened. So although a product was provided they seem incapable of completing a full installation and the glass may not even be compatible.
- Am I opening myself up to a mechanic's lien, repossession attempt, or any sort of other legal repercussions? if the chargeback goes through? I've read that some states let a shop reclaim a vehicle if payment gets reversed/dishonored after they release it.
- I would just like to ensure I avoid any legal issues.
I've communicated this to the shop multiple times, they did the initial and then re-attempt at the calibration and they're answer to 'what if it doesn't work' was 'we'll keep trying' but it appears they're just clearing the error codes and hoping for the best.
