Should I Legally Marry My Life Partner For Financial Purposes?

Card image cap

Disclaimer; I have been in a loving relationship for the last 8 years with someone I intend to spend the rest of my life with and refer to as my husband. The only reason we aren’t legally married is because I value a committed life partnership without the legal and cultural constraints that come with state-defined marriage.

With that said, we have now been told by many friends it would be advantageous financially for us to get married. For context, he makes 600k annually and I make 65k and we do not have children and will never have children.

The ONLY reason we aren’t legally married is because of my psychological aversion to it; so should I get over it and legally get married for the benefits (if there are any?)

For context:

  1. He wants to get married. He has been trying to convince me to get legally married for years.
  2. We have healthcare power of attorneys, wills, life insurance, and advanced care directives to help mitigate some of what a legal marriage provides.

  3. Location: We have legal residence in North Carolina and South Carolina (he spends 50% of his time in both for work).
