Someone Else Has My Van. Please Hep.
Location: Portland, Oregon
Several months ago, I let someone borrow my van, with the understanding that this was a temporary situation, unless they wanted to purchase the van at an agreed upon price. This person later indicated that they could not afford the price I am asking, and they somehow got the impression that I agreed to rent it to them at a rate of a dollar a month. This was NOT the agreement, and it is not written anywhere! In addition, the person driving is NOT supposed to be driving, as they are unlicensed and uninsured. They assured me that their friend, who DOES have a license, would be driving the van.
I have attempted to ask for the return of the vehicle, and was told this person needs it for their art career, because they have to drive their paintings to the gallery.
I do not care.
Unfortunately, I am hesitant to simply retrieve my property, as it is currently filled with their property. I have been advised that it will do me no good to get the police involved, as they will do nothing. I am paying insurance for an unlicensed driver to tool around Portland, and I want it to stop immediately.
What do I do?
