Tenants Taken By Ice
Location: New York state.
My grandparents have an "attached dwelling unit" which they rent out. The tenants were a couple in their 30s. The man worked for a gardening business and the wife worked as a cook/janitor in a restaurant.
They disappeared in December. We don't know where they went, but based on the circumstances, all signs point to them being taken by ICE. Neither of them came home from work. There was an ICE operation in our area on that day, and it was reported in the news. The restaurant that she worked at shut down a few days later and hasn't opened ever since.
So my question is what are my grandparents supposed to do here? All their stuff is still in the unit, the food is probably rotting in the fridge by now. Can we go in and clean it out? Do we have to store their stuff for a certain amount of time?
I should mention that they had the rent on autopay, and it has been paid on time every month. There was no written lease.
