Wrongful Termination (possibly More)

Location: California.

A little background: I have been working an admin position at a property management company for the past 4 months . I was hired to get my foot in the door until a position I was more qualified for opened up in May. The manager was well aware from day one that admin was not my strength or comfort zone. I’ve been working the receptionist position for months with not one complaint from management and zero warnings/feedback . The 2 other office workers were not fans of me and I could tell they were always annoyed with me asking questions /etc but I never did anything that would be bad enough to get fired.

Yesterday, out of nowhere, my boss calls me into her office and says corporate called and I am to be terminated IMMEDIATELY , I was in complete shock as this is sounding concerning. I begged for an an explanation but was told “I have no idea and this is from up top”. I left the office humiliated and confused.

I later received a call from HR and they said there was no misconduct or anything I did wrong … clearly something is off?

The ONLY thing I can think of is that my boss heard a false rumor about me from a company I worked at years ago . Sh is friends with someone who got me a temp job with a crazy woman . This woman accused me of stealing a package (which was later found because it was MISPLACED/never stolen). But she had already fired me for it so I didn’t fight it and moved on with my life. Fast forward to yesterday, apparently my boss told the office I was let go because of unfavorable info about me? So not only was I wrongfully terminated but I believe this is defamation or slander at this point? I’m really upset. I hated the job but needed it to survive until I found something else
