Update On Mason Graham’s Knee Injury For Browns

Cleveland Browns DT Mason Graham was off to a tremendous start to his second season, notching four sacks in his first three games. Then came yesterday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. Even though it was a feel-good ending to the game with the Browns pulling off the 27-24 victory, Graham suffered an injury early in the game that forced him to go to the locker room.

Friday afternoon, Ian Rapoport of ESPN provided an update on Graham, which is a combination of good and bad news for the young defensive tackle:

#Browns DL Mason Graham, a standout who leads the team in sacks, is expected to miss a few weeks with an MCL sprain and ankle sprain, sources say based on the preliminary evaluation.

The bad news is that Graham will miss some time, but the good news is that it does not appear to be a long-term injury. Rapoport says that Graham suffered an MCL sprain and an ankle sprain when his leg bent backwards, injuries which should keep him out for a few weeks.

Let’s say he misses the rest of October, which would be three games — those would come against the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and Tennessee Titans. Then, on November 1, Cleveland takes on the Steelers again. We’ll see how things go with Graham week-by-week, but if the Browns keep playing the way they are, they could have a solid record by the time he gets back. It’s possible that the Browns place Graham on the short-term IR list too, which would open up a roster spot in exchange for him missing four games.

The Browns will rely on Maliek Collins, Mike Hall Jr, and Adin Huntington at defensive tackle. I would expect them to also call up Sam Kamara from the practice squad soon.
